Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

Traditional IRA

A traditional IRA is a tax-advantaged personal savings plan where contributions may be tax deductible.

  • Withdrawals are penalty-free once IRA owner reaches 59 ½
  • Possible tax deduction, based on income and retirement plan participation
  • Upward IRA accounts are federally insured up to $250,000
  • IRA contributions for a given year can generally be made anytime between January 1 and the tax-filing deadline of the following year (April 15th).

Roth IRA

A Roth IRA is a tax-advantaged personal savings plan where contributions are not deductible but qualified distributions may be tax free.

Features

  • Money grows tax free, and you can withdraw tax free after age 59½
  • You can put money in your account as long as you have earned income that qualifies
  • No required minimum distributions for as long as you live
  • Beneficiaries earn tax-free withdrawals
