We want make you aware of a scam involving companies offering to file for a property value re-assessment. Don’t fall for this!
You may receive a letter in the mail — or e-mail — designed to look like it’s from the County Assessor or other government office. The letter often tells the property owner to send in a check to have a re-assessment done on their property to lower their property taxes.
These companies may charge hundreds of dollars to file for a reduction in value on behalf of the property owner. Some companies are even imposing late fees if the application is received after an arbitrary deadline. Be aware that solicitations from private companies offering to pursue a reduction in property taxes must clearly indicate that they are NOT a government agency and that their services are NOT approved or endorsed by any government agency. Failure to provide such notice is a violation of California law.
Bottom line: You can contact your County Assessor’s office and file for a reassessment yourself, quickly and easily. And usually, at no cost.
